UGTFD LAUNCHES STIPEND PROGRAM

Response times being reduced dramatically in Upper Gwynedd

You may notice more and more late night activity around our firehouse and through the overnight most, if not all, nights of the week.

The Upper Gwynedd Township Fire Department in West Point, PA recently acquired the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant. The SAFER grant was created... to provide funding directly to fire departments and volunteer firefighter interest organizations to help them increase or maintain the number of trained, "front line" firefighters available in their communities. The goal of SAFER is to enhance the local fire departments' abilities to comply with staffing, response and operational standards established by the NFPA (NFPA 1710 and/or NFPA 1720).

This SAFER grant has allowed UGTFD to launch its long awaited Reimbursement or Stipend Program. This program, which started April 1, 2014 reimburses members who staff the firehouse from 9 PM to 5 AM each night. This program is a well thought out effort to provide overnight fire protection to the residences and businesses of Upper Gwynedd Township and to aid in surrounding municipalities who aim to maintain the same objective.

Each night the crew engages in light station duties, training exercises, and pre-planning. It also helps maintain professionalism, response time of 4 minutes or less, and camaraderie.

If you are a certified level 1 firefighter or higher and you are interested in more information regarding our program please feel free to email me at chief@ugfd.org.

Respectfully,
Chris Sharkey
Chief, Upper Gwynedd Township Fire Department
